The choice is between an airplane cabin, a shared helicopter with doors on or off, a helicopter tour with a canyon landing, and a private booking. Safari's 90-minute canyon tour includes time on the ground, so its total duration should not be compared directly with flight time.

What changes the price you pay

Choose the experience first. Airplane tours have the lowest starting fares in this comparison. Helicopter options add choices such as doors-off flying, a canyon landing or a private booking.

Compare the two Air Kauai formats. Its shared doors-on flight starts at $335 and its shared doors-off flight at $386. Both are listed at 45 minutes. The $51 difference is between these two products. It does not establish a universal doors-off surcharge.

Decide whether you want a landing. Safari's Waterfall Safari starts at $336 for a 60-minute sightseeing flight. Its $369 canyon-landing tour lasts 90 minutes in total, including the stop in Olokele Canyon.

Check the private booking total. Ali'i's private tour is listed from $425 per person, with doors-on and doors-off options. Check the total price for your party and any booking requirements before comparing it with shared seats.

Check the total before booking

Passenger-weight rules can require an additional paid seat. Safari requires an additional seat for any individual guest weighing 250 pounds or more. An additional seat is also required for two guests who individually do not exceed 250 pounds but together weigh 420 pounds or more. Blue Hawaiian lists an additional-seat requirement for passengers over 240 pounds. Air Kauai's doors-off tour has separate individual and group thresholds. Read the rules for your exact product and provide accurate weights when booking.

Check optional extras. Air Kauai's doors-off listing excludes its media/photo package and pilot gratuity. Other products have their own inclusions and exclusions. Do not assume the same extras or charges apply to every tour.

Read the cancellation terms separately from the fare. Check the deadline for cancelling your booking and the conditions for operator cancellations or rescheduling.

See Kauai by airplane from $155

Wings Over Kauai and Air Ventures offer airplane tours with listed starting fares of $155 and $159 per person. Both are listed at around 65 minutes and feature the Na Pali Coast, Waimea Canyon and Hanalei scenery.

Wings Over Kauai's AirVan has large bubble windows. The Air Ventures product includes a window seat for every passenger. Explore the airplane tours page to compare the two.

Choose an airplane if you want a scenic flight at a lower starting fare. Choose among the helicopter tours if you want a doors-off format or a tour with a canyon landing.

So is a Kauai helicopter tour worth the price?

Start with the experience you want from the flight. A doors-off tour offers an open cabin. Safari's canyon-landing tour adds a stop on the ground. An airplane tour offers another way to see the coast and canyons at a lower starting fare.

Compare your preferred format with the route, duration and total cost for your party. The right choice depends on what you want to do and what you are comfortable spending.
